The Diving in Scapa Flow

Back to Diving in Scapa Flow

The natural harbour of Scapa Flow has been used as an anchorage since Viking times; it was the main base of the British Navy in both World Wars, and the last port of call for the German High Seas Fleet.  The wreckage left as a reminder of this maritime history now makes Scapa Flow probably the finest cold-water diving location in the world.  In addition to the remains of two World Wars and other wrecks from peacetime years, Orkney is blessed with clean waters and an abundance of marine life.  It is therefore not surprising that Orkney is such a popular location for wreck ferrets, marine biologists, and photographers alike.  Some of the many dive sites are shown below and described in following pages.
